Description
This postcard shows the bend in the Sangamon River where the New Salem mill and dam were located in the 1830s while Abraham Lincoln resided in New Salem, Illinois. The image is surrounded by a light border with the captions printed on the top and lower margins. The lower caption reads "A mill and dam were formerly at this bend in the Sangamon River and it was here that Lincoln had his greatest difficulty on his ill-fated voyage by flat boat to New Orleans. Had embarked with merchandise aboard farther up the river." The reverse is divided vertically with the left side labeled "Correspondence" and the right side labeled "Address."
