Description

This postcard features a reproduction of the ink and wash painting done by artist Lloyd Ostendorf illustrating President Abraham Lincoln meeting the governors of the states in the Union on September 26, 1862. He had just issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation which would not become effective until January 1, 1863. A few of the governors are depicted seated at small tables. President Lincoln and the rest of the governors are depicted standing. The caption is printed along the bottom edge of the image which reads "President Lincoln meets informally at the White House for two hours to confer with the loyal war governors on September 26, 1862." The postcard reverse is divided. Narrative text and the names of the governors are printed on the left side. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
