Description

This postcard features the heroic-sized statue of Abraham Lincoln done by sculptor Andrew O'Connor which stands in front of the State Capitol Building in Springfield, Illinois. Dedicated in 1918, the statue inaccurately depicts a beardless Lincoln just before boarding the train for Washington, D. C., for his inauguration in March of 1861. Lincoln had actually begun growning his beard a few months before leaving for his inauguration. A white border surrounds the image with the caption printed in the top and bottom margins. The postcard reverse is divided. The number R 68579 is printed along the top edge near the middle. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
