Description

This colored postcard features a reproduction of a painting titled "Sword and Pen." At the top of the image an angel with wings spread is depicted against a dark orange background holding a sword in his/her right hand and a quill pen in the left hand. A gold-colored banner is unfurled across the width with the caption printed on it in blue ink. Below the angel's right wing soldiers holding rifles are depicted. Beneath the angel's left wing is an illustration of President Abraham Lincoln seated at a desk and looking at a document held in his left hand while holding a quill pen in his right hand. Between the illustrations of the soldiers and President Lincoln is an illustration of the Lincoln Family home in Springfield, Illinois, framed in a gold-colored recangular frame. The name C. Chapman is printed in red ink just inside of the lower left corner of the frame. Below the frame is a banner reading "The Home of Abraham Lincoln, Springfield, Ill" decorated with olive branches and palm leaves. The lower edge of the postcard has a blue field with white stars and white and red stripes adding a patriotic element to the image. The postcard reverse is divided with the left side labeled "For Correspondence" and the right side labeled "For Address Only." This postcard appears to be a pirated version of the original postcard published by the International Art Publishing Co. of New York and Berlin.
