Description

This linen postcard features the oldest building on the campus of Knox College, Old Main. On October 7th, 1858, Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas debated the moral issues of slavery and other political issues of the day on the steps of Old Main before a crowd estimated as high as 20,000. The debate was the fifth of seven debates held throughout the state of Illinois in preparation for the 1858 United States Senate elections. The image is surrounded by a white border. The caption is printed in the top and bottom margins. The number 0B-H771 is printed in the lower right corner of the border. The postcard reverse is divided.
