Description
This postcard is a photograph of the Lincoln Monument located in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois. President Abraham Lincoln, his wife, Mary, and three of his four sons are buried in the tomb beneath the monument. Gutzon Borglum's bronze head of Lincoln is mounted in front of the rotunda. A flight of stairs on each side of the rotunda leads to the terrace. Four bronze groupings representing each branch of the military during the Civil War anchor the corners of the base of the obelisk. In front of the obelisk and above the entrance stands a full-length statue of Lincoln by Larkin Mead, designer of the Monument, depicting Lincoln as President. The caption and the number D-48 are printed along the lower edge of the image. The postcard reverse is divided.
