Description

This postcard features an illustration of Abraham Lincoln as a young adult when he lived in the village of New Salem, Illinois, from 1831 to 1837. He is depicted walking while holding an open book in his right hand and with three more books held close to his side with his left hand. A log cabin is in the background. Lincoln is shown beardless and wearing frontier-type clothing. The reverse is divided vertically with descriptive text on the left side. Also printed vertically along the left edge is the first-day of issue statement dated Aug. 3, 1978. A large round Athens, IL, postmark with the same date is stamped on the right side next to a 10-cent postage stamp.
