- Title supplied by cataloger.; CLICK ON WEB ADDRESS TO REACH THIS DOCUMENT.; Printed form, filled in and signed by William Butler, clerk (Stephen L. Logan, judge), ordering the sheriff of Sangamon County to recover the costs of the suit. Docketed on verso: "James P. Hawthorn vs David Wooldridge: Fi. Fa," with costs, "Nothing made on this execution to be renewed" and signed G. Elkins, sheriff.; Wooldridge assaulted Hawthorn by beating and kicking him. As a result, Hawthorn was incapacitated for six weeks and was unable to transact any business. Hawthorn sued Wooldridge in an action of trespass vi et armis and requested $500 in damages. Wooldridge retained Stuart and Lincoln and pleaded not guilty. The jury found for Hawthorn and awarded $36 in damages. Scholars have frequently described this case and another case between these parties (Hawthorn v. Wooldridge) as Lincoln's first cases as an attorney.--The Law Practice of Abraham Lincoln (online second edition).
