Matheny, Clerk of Sangamon Circuit Court fifty cents my fee as a witness for one day attendance in case of Summons against Bale of the April term 1833." Signed with X by Levi Summers.; Jacob Bale failed to pay Pollard Simmons $80 on an account. Simmons sued Bale in the Justice of the Peace court to recover the debt but the jury found for Bale. Simmons appealed the judgment to the circuit court. The court subpoenaed Lincoln as a witness for Bale. The case was later dismissed.
