Description:: Handwritten document, 14 x 20 cm. 'Witnesses in a suit wherein P. Simmons is complainant, J. Bale, Defendant. Elijah Estep, John Ritter, Samuel Ritter, Peter Lukins, Rachel Estep (consort of E.C. Estep), George Carpenter, William Balding, Ezekiel Balding, John Estep. July 1832 P. Simmons.' Jacob Bale failed to pay Pollard Simmons $80 on an account. Simmons sued Bale in the Justice of the Peace court to recover the debt but the jury found for Bale. Simmons appealed the judgment to the circuit court. The court subpoenaed Lincoln as a witness for Bale. The case was later dismissed.
