- Handwritten receipt, 11 x 20 cm: 'Rec'd of C.R. Matheny $2.50 my fee as a witness attending circuit court in case of John Close against John Ritter Sept. 11th 1933.' Signed by Tilman Hornbuckle. John Close first sued John Ritter in the Justice of the Peace court to recover a $73 debt. The jury found for Close and awarded him $73. Ritter then appealed the judgment to the Sangamon County Circuit Court. Abraham Lincoln was called to testify as a witness on Ritter's behalf. The court affirmed the judgment in favor of Close but reduced the award to $35.
