- Handwritten receipt, 12 x 21 cm. 'Adams County, November 1st 1833. Mr. Mathena, Clerk of Sangamon County. Sir, please to pay Gordon Martial two dollars fifty cents for me. It being for my attendance on a suit between Jacob Bales and Pollard Simmons in surceit cort in Sept. 1832. George Carpenter.' Docketed on verso 'Received of C.R. Matheny two dollars on [this matter] William Marshel.' Jacob Bale failed to pay Pollard Simmons $80 on an account. Simmons sued Bale in the Justice of the Peace court to recover the debt but the jury found for Bale. Simmons appealed the judgment to the circuit court. The court subpoenaed Lincoln as a witness for Bale. The case was later dismissed.
