- Title supplied by cataloger.; CLICK ON WEB ADDRESS TO REACH THIS DOCUMENT.; Handwritten letter on "Isham, Lincoln & Beale, Honore Buildings, Chicago" letterhead, dated "18 Feby 89" and signed by "Robert T. Lincoln." Lincoln replies to a request for a letter of his father's. Lincoln says that he doesn't have one but that there are plenty of such letters. "If a signature cut from a cancelled check will do any good, I can give you that." Autograph letter signed (ALS).; The eldest surviving son of Abraham Lincoln, Robert "Bob" Todd Lincoln was licensed as an attorney in Chicago on February 22, 1867. He was certified to practice law four days later on February 26, 1867. In 1877 he turned down President Rutherford B. Hayes' offer to appoint him Assistant Secretary of State, but later accepted an appointment as President James Garfield's Secretary of War, serving from 1881 to 1885 under Presidents Garfield and Chester A. Arthur. Lincoln served as the U.S. minister to the United Kingdom from 1889 to 1893 under President Benjamin Harrison.; William Berri was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1848. He began his professional career at his father's business in oilcloth manufacturing and carpet merchandizing. Later he established a printing business, eventually becoming one of the owners of the Brooklyn Standard Union. He was one of the founders of the Lincoln Club in Brooklyn, New York. In 1896, he was appointed president of the Board of Trustees of the New York and Brooklyn Bridge Company. Berri died in 1917.
