Handwritten receipt, 7 x 18 cm, signed but not written by Stanley Lockerman: 'Received of David Woldridge in full of all claims in the attendance of the circuit court at Springfield where James P. Hawthorn was plaintiff and David Woldridge was defendant this the 2 day of Sept 1837.' Wooldridge assaulted Hawthorn by beating and kicking him. As a result, Hawthorn was incapacitated for six weeks and was unable to transact any business. Hawthorn sued Wooldridge in an action of trespass vi et armis and requested $500 in damages. Wooldridge retained Stuart and Lincoln and pleaded not guilty. The jury found for Hawthorn and awarded $36 in damages.
