- Handwritten note, 5 x 18 cm: 'Due Nelson Alley twenty one dollars and fifty seven cents. Jason Duncan. Petersburgh May 18th 1833.' Docketed on verso: 'J. Duncan note.' Jason Duncan gave Nelson Alley a promissory note for $21.57 but failed to make payment. Alley sued to recover the debt in Justice of the Peace court. Abraham Lincoln wrote the summons. Duncan failed to appear, and the Justice of the Peace ruled for Alley and awarded $21.57. Duncan then appealed the judgment to the circuit court. The resolution of the appeal is not known.
