- Letter, 20 cm, explaining the delay in the appointment of M. Callander after ""the President ordered the appointment"" but ""I would advise you not to give up yet."" Signed by M. Hoge, Surgeon in Charge. Endorsed by Secretary of the Treasury Salmon Chase: ""Mr. Hay will remember the Presidents direction to appoint Rev. D.W. Tolford, Chaplain at Camp Dennison. It seems that there has been some mistake have it rectified."" Hoge is likely Milton Hoge, Assistant Surgeon in the 52nd Ohio Infantry.
