To Lincoln

City July 31st, 1861

To The President,
Should the State of Kentucky be divided as a Judicial District in accordance with the Bill now pending in the Senate, I would recommend for Judge of the Lower or Southern District, the Hon. Henry Pirtle of the City of Louisville. His qualifications for the Station are most eminent. To great learning and incorruptible integrity, he has much business tact and uncommon industry. He was long a Circuit Judge in Ky and subsequently for many years, he was Chancellor of Louisville, and rendered universal satisfaction. He resigned his office more than once.
His appointment would be exceedingly satisfactory so far as my intelligence goes.
Respectfully R Apperson

Gov Chase knows Judge Pirtle.
