Description:
Handwritten letter, 32 cm, headed Carroll Prison, signed in a different hand 'Respectfully yours, Major Chas. R. Barney.' Dating is incomplete: 'December __ 1864.' Text includes a number of corrections and additions. Barney, along with 'Messrs North and Jones' had been imprisoned on unnamed charges. Barney had been interviewed by Lincoln, Judge Advocate Foster, and the prison Superintendent on the first day of December, provided information and was assured that the prosecution would be dropped and Barney would be released. On the 21st day of December Barney's trial was recommenced. Barney writes to Lincoln asking him to remember his decision on Barney's case and asks for release from prison. Letter signed (LS).
