Handwritten letter, 24 cm, headed St. Paul, Min., dated Jany 12th 1861 and signed 'Sherwood Hough, Register of Deeds.' Recommends 'Honorable C. F. Buck of Winona County' for the Office of United States Marshal for the District of Minnesota. Autograph letter signed (ALS).
St. Paul, Min Jan’y 12th 1861.

To His Excellency
Abraham Lincoln.
President Elect.

Honorable C. F. Buck of Winona County, I am informed is an applicant for the Office of United States Marshal for the District of Minnesota.

As a member of the Republican party it gives me great pleasure to bear testimony to Mr. Buck’s qualifications to make an “honest and capable” Officer. And if appointed I doubt not will discharge all the duties pertaining to said office in a fearless and faithful manner, with honor to himself and credit to our party.

Mr. Buck is well known throughout our State as a thorough going and zealous Republican. And in my humble opinion his appointment to said Office will be favorably received by a large portion of the party than that of any other applicant for said office known to me.

I am very respectfully
Yours &c
Sherwood Hough
