Description
This color poster promotes performances of Parsons and Pool's productions of the play "Uncle Tom's Cabin." They were very popular in the last few decades of the 19th century and early 20th century. It has been guessed that more people saw the play than actually read Harriet Beecher Stowe's book. Sixteen theatrical companies performed the play across the country over a period of almost 90 years. This poster features a black and white portrait of President Abraham Lincoln on the right. On the left several people are printed in color. In the foreground there is an African American slave kneeling on the ground with broken shackles and a book in front of him. A color portrait of Harriet Beecher Stowe is in the upper left corner of the poster. The title "Uncle Tom's Cabin" is printed in red ink across the lower edge of the poster. "Parsons and Pool's" is printed in a smaller font in red ink in the upper right corner. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
