Description

Beige embossed paper memorial fan features two large rounded scallops at the top, two pointed scallops on each side at the midsection, and two small scallops at the bottom. A circle embossed in the center depicts an American flag, a piece of parchment, and a structure with a rotunda. The following words are raised around the circle: "The Ladies Memorial to the Brave Defenders of this Glorious Union. Abraham Lincoln." Underneath the circle a woman weeps on a grave beside a willow tree. The grave reads: "Forever Hallowed be the Heroes Grave." "Remember the Giver" is embossed below this scene. The edges of the fan are heavily decorated with scrollwork, flowers, and angels playing instruments. "Scott" (the maker?) is embossed at the top of the fan. The reverse of the fan reveals pink paper. A curved wooden handle is threaded through the fan. The fan was mostly sold or distributed at Sanitary Fairs. Part of The Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
