Description

Eleven cardboard stock album pages with two souvenir postmarked cacheted covers pasted to one side of each page in a black leather 3-ring binder. The title is printed in gray and dark red ink at the top of each page. The envelopes each have a black mourning border on the edges and a cachet illustrating the location of an event occurring on the specific 1865 date shown. The location and date are printed above each illustration and explanatory text is printed below. A 1965 postmark dated exactly 100 years after the original 1865 date with the same location is in the center of each envelope near the top. A canceled postage stamp is in the top right corner and a quotation is printed in dark red ink in the lower right corner of the envelope. The 21 envelopes begin with the shooting of President Abraham Lincoln on Friday, April 14, 1865, and continue with an envelope for each consecutive day through the funeral train route and ending with the final ceremony at the receiving vault in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois, on May 4, 1865.
