Round brass campaign ferrotype features a centered tintype portrait of Stephen Douglas, the Northern Democratic Party candidate, who is beardless and wears a dark jacket, bow tie, and white shirt. The portrait is surrounded by raised braided trim. Embossed around the portrait are the words, "Stephen A. Douglas, 1860" and leafy branches. Raised braided trim encircles the button. The top is pierced with a hole. The reverse is identical except it features a tintype portrait of Herschel V. Johnson. His name and the date are embossed around his portrait.
