Description

White rosebud from Abraham Lincoln's casket. The rosebud, now severely browned, is tightly closed, includes part of its stem and is tacked to a piece of textured white paper. The rose is outlined in pencil. A black rectangular border is drawn around the flower. The following is written inside the rectangle in tight black script: "A Nation's Heart Was Struck April 14th, 1865. Lincoln's remains were brought to Indianapolis on the way to Springfield, Ill. for burial, and lay in state in the rotunda of the old state capitol, Sunday, April 30th, 1865. Fresh flowers were placed inside the coffin, those removed were distributed among the ladies who were invited to be present. This white rosebud was given to Mrs. Harriet Beeler Hall, who presented it to her son, Arthur Fletcher Hall, May 11th, 1912." The paper is encased by a wood frame with gold trim and a glass front. Picture wire is strung across the frame back for hanging. Part of The Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
