Description
This 19 mm Indian head penny was made of a special copper-nickel alloy that was only used during the Civil War and which makes Civil War-era Indian Heads heavier than other editions of the one-cent coins. The obverse features the center image of Liberty wearing an Indian headdress surrounded with the inscription "United States of America." The date 1863 is inscribed below the image. The reverse features the words "One Cent" inscribed within an oak-leaf open wreath. A small United States Shield is in the opening at the top of the wreath. This coin is one of sixteen different coins that were minted and placed into circulation during the administration of President Abraham Lincoln.
