Description

Circular commemorative pin features images of President Abraham Lincoln and Senator Stephen A. Douglas. On the viewer's right, Douglas is seen in three quarter view and on the viewer's left, Lincoln is seen in frontal view. (Abraham Lincoln did not wear a beard at the time of the debates in 1858.) The images are closely spaced and appear on a white ground. Text below the images reads "Freeport ILL. August 27 1858" which was the location of the second of seven debates between the two candidates vying for the position of senator of Illinois in the 1858 election. The pin has a coiled brass frame and the reverse features a safety pin mechanism used for pinning. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
