Description

Porcelain White House dessert plate features a hand-painted eagle in the center of the plate with its wings spread, perched on a red and white striped crest. Yellow sun rays shine behind the eagle, and white clouds surround its feet. "E Pluribus Unum" is lettered on a banner amongst the clouds. The plate features a wide reddish purple (solferino) band with gold dots around the inside edge of the rim, gold braid around the outside edge of the rim, and scalloped edges. This dessert plate is one of the pieces from the set of 658 pieces ordered for the White House by Mary Todd Lincoln in the summer of 1861.
