Description
This 18.5 mm mostly silver ten-cent coin features on the obverse Liberty facing the viewer's left wearing a beaded coronet inscribed LIBERTY in incuse letters and bordered with thirteen stars representing the original thirteen colonies of the United States. The 1829 date is inscribed below the image. A patriotic eagle with a shield is the central image on the reverse. A banner just above the head of the eagle reads "E pluribus unum." "United States of America" follows the arc of the edge of the coin around the eagle. "10 C." is inscribed below the image. The edge is reeded. Abraham Lincoln may have seen coins such as this one while living in Indiana from the age of 7 to 21. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
