Description

This copper 1818 Liberty Head 85-cent coin features on the obverse a depiction of a more matronly Lady Liberty with flowing hair in the center which is surrounded by thirteen stars representing the thirteen original colonies of the United States. The date 1818 is below the image. The reverse features a patriotic eagle in the center with a banner above its head reading "E Pluribus Unum." Following the coins edge above the banner are the words “United States of America.” Below the eagle is the value of the coin,"85 c." The edge of the coin is reeded. Abraham Lincoln probably saw coins such as this one while living in Indiana with his family from 1816 to 1830. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
