Description
This illustration is from Harper's Bazaar newspaper, dated April 9, 1881. The scene depicts two allegorical female figures, one on the left representing the United States and the other representing Russia. Russia is bent over weeping with a hand covering her face while America holds her hand and places a wreath on a coffin behind the woman. The coffin is labeled "Alexander A.D. 1881." Personal effects such as a hat and sword are laid out on the floor in front of the coffin. Two pictures hang in the background: Lincoln is on the left, titled "The American Liberator, Emancipated 3,000,000 Slaves, Assassinated April 14th, 1865." The portrait on the right depicts Alexander II and reads, "The Russian Liberator, Emancipated 23,000,000 Serfs, Assassinated March 13, 1881."
