Description

This is a preliminary drawing of a political cartoon before its being published in a newspaper. It features Abraham Lincoln standing assertively on a podium on the proper left side of the cartoon. The podium is draped with American flags. Lincoln gazes out as he holds one clenched fist to his chest, and the other holds a piece of paper at his side. Below the podium is a quote, "The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here -----" The quote comes from Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. Next to Abraham Lincoln on the podium, occupying the majority of the cartoon image is a large, faintly visible portrait of Lincoln that appears almost like a watermark. The artist signed the cartoon in ink in the bottom proper left corner, "Kuekes", along with the date, 11-19-1963. The title appears below. Handwritten largely in pencil at the bottom margin, towards the proper left is "Tues. Nov. 19, 1963." Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
