Description
This is a leaf from the March 11, 1876, issue of Harper's Weekly magazine. The leaf shows pages 203-4. Page 204 features a political cartoon titled "Injured Innocence--Southern "Chivalry" Not Dead Yet". In the cartoon, Jefferson Davis is portrayed dressed in a hooded woman's cloak and hoop skirt, fanning himself. His boots and spurs peek out from underneath his skirt. He stands atop a stage, and looks down onto a medieval knight riding on a rearing horse, with joust in hand. The background shows the architecture of the interior of a stadium, and people sitting in the seats, watching the spectacle. In the archways of the architecture is written: "The United States Circus" and below that "The Washington Press Band". On the side of the stage on which Davis is standing is written the following: "The Unprotected Female; / or the / Defrauded Sour Apple / Tree / A Comic Tragedy." The cartoon is signed by the artist near Davis' feet, "Th:Nast" (Thomas Nast). Page 203 consists of excerpts of different columns. There is the end of the continuation of an article from previous pages, followed by an article called "A Roman Catholic Bishop Upon the Schools", then "Personal", "Domestic Intelligence", and "Foreign News".
