Description

This is an original drawing for a political cartoon that was published in the February 12, 1954, issue of the Dayton Journal-Herald newspaper. It features a large portrait of Abraham Lincoln on the viewer's left of the cartoon. Opposite him, are five smaller portraits of soldiers representing veterans of five different wars. The top soldier with the triangular shaped hat represents the American Revolution. The next four soldiers represent, respectively, the United States Civil War, World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. Below Lincoln's portrait is a large piece of paper upon which is written a paraphrase from Lincoln's speeches in Ohio and Kansas in 1959 regarding the principle of democracy: "Men will pass away--die; but the principle of democracy will live, forever. . . --A. Lincoln". The artist signed the cartoon in the bottom right corner of the drawing. "(Dayton Journal-Herald, editorial cartoon for Feb. 12 1954)" is handwritten in blue pencil in the bottom margin. Below this there is a personal inscription from the artist written in blue ink: "To Dr. Louis A. Warren, With kindest regards, Lloyd Ostendorf". The title is written in blue pencil in the top margin.
