Description

This etching is a political cartoon by Adalbert Volck, a Southern sympathizer living in Baltimore, Maryland, during the United States Civil War. This cartoon, one of the Confederate War Etchings series, depicts two Confederate soldiers watching the Grant's Union forces working on the canal. One soldier is standing beside a large tree and looking through a telescope, while the other one kneels while holding his rifle. They are shown in a lush swamp like area. The purpose of the canal was to divert the channel of the river and leave Vicksburg an inland city. The number 29 appears just above the top left corner of the image. Original etching one of thirty published in Volck's "Confederate War Etchings." Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
