Description

This hand-colored lithograph is a composite of the family of President Abraham Lincoln gathered together in a parlor setting. Since the Lincoln family never posed together for any artist or photographer, many artists used photographs of the individuals to compose a family scene for publishing after Lincoln' death. In this print Mrs. Lincoln is seated to the viewer's left with her left arm resting on the table and her feet on a footstool. The Lincoln's youngest son, Tad, is shown leaning against his mother's lap on the right and holding her hand. (The young boy shown is much younger than the real Tad during his years in the White House and looks nothing like him.) The oldest son, Robert, is seated to his mother's left behind the table with his left arm resting on the table. President Lincoln is seated opposite his wife with middle son Willie standing between the president and the table. The two are looking at a book held by the President. On the table are two smaller books and a vase of flowers. A large framed landscape hangs on the wall behind the table. A toy cannon is on the floor in the foreground.
