Description
This hand-colored lithograph, done from a painting by G. Catlin, features a portrait of a Sauk Native American tribe chief known as Black Hawk. He is depicted wearing jewelry in his ears and around his neck and an animal hide garment. In his left arm he is holding a bird that looks like a black and white chicken. The chief's name in his native language is printed below the image: Muck-a-tah-mish-o-kah-kaik with "The Black Hawk, A Sac Chief" printed below. Along the top edge of the print in the left corner is "Dr. Prichard's Natural History of Man" and in the right corner is "Plate XXXI." The damage to the right edge of the this page indicates that it was removed from a book. When the Illinois governor called for troops to fight the Indians led by Black Hawk in 1832, Abraham Lincoln joined the Illinois militia volunteers. It was his only military experience before he was elected president in 1860. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
