Description

This two-page engraving published in the April 29, 1865, issue of Harper's Weekly illustrates the nation's grief over the death of President Abraham Lincoln on April 15, 1865. The central image is President Lincoln's casket partially draped with the American flag with Columbia kneeling beside it and weeping into her right hand while her left arm rests on the flag. A soldier is shown in the upper left corner of the image seated with his head bowed on his hands which are resting on the hilt of his sword. A sailor is shown in the upper right corner of the image with his head bowed on his hands which are resting on the hilt of his weapon. At the center of the lower edge of the image an inset of the interior of a church decorated in mourning drape shows the minister at the front of the congregation appearing to deliver a funeral sermon.
