Description
This steel engraving was done from a photograph taken of President Abraham Lincoln in February of 1864 in Washington, D. C. The scenic background was added to the photograph for artistic effect. In the vignetted photograph, a head and shoulders portrait, President Lincoln is facing slightly toward the viewer's right. He is wearing a black coat, waistcoat, and bow tie and his watch fob can be partially seen. The scenery added for artistic effect includes scenes of slavery and freedom and war and peace. At top center are a document resting on a pile of books. At the bottom center are two hands clasped with a banner below them reading "Union."
