Description

This print featuring a head and shoulders portrait of a beardless Abraham Lincoln is a reproduction of the original illustration published in Frank Leslie's illustrated Newspaper, volume 11-12, March 9, 1861, pp. 248-49, just before he was inaugurated as President of the United States. The portrait is surrounded by "Scenes And Incidents In His Life" including "Lincoln Cropping Corn In Ind[ian]a For Mr. Crawford," "Lincoln Splitting Rails For Mr. Crawford" and "Capt. Abr. Lincoln In The Black Hawk War" in the four corners. Additional illustrations include: "Law Offices"; "Springfield Capitol"; "Lincoln Residence" and two torchlight paraders, just below center, one carrying a torch atop a pole with an American flag. Other images depict him as a rail splitter, soldier, and lawyer. Below the image of Lincoln there is an axe with other tools and "President Elect Abraham Lincoln" printed above them. "Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper" is printed above the entire image. "Portrait of Abraham Lincoln President Elect of the United States of America with scenes and incidents in his life. - Phot. by P. Butler, Springfield, IL" is printed at the very bottom of the page.
