Description
This drawing is a political cartoon which was published in the February 12, 1955, issue of the Dayton, Ohio, Journal-Herald. It depicts President Abraham Lincoln who stands disproportionately tall looking at a globe divided by the iron curtain with the Soviet Union flag on one side and the flag of the United Nations on the other side. He holds a piece of paper in one hand that reads "Government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free." The globe is labeled "World Divided" below the flags. The artist's signature is in the lower right corner of the image. "Co-existence?" was handwritten in blue pencil in the top margin and crossed out. An inscritpion written in the bottom margin reads, "To Dr. L. A. Warren--with kindest regards, Lloyd Ostendorf, 1955." A piece of paper taped to the reverse provides the publication information from The Journal Herald. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
