Description
This is an original drawing by Louis Goodwin that was published as an editorial cartoon on February 12, 1972, in the Columbus, Ohio, Dispatch. The Lincoln Memorial is depicted on the viewer's left. Eight different Lincoln quotations are placed around the statue. Uncle Sam is depicted standing at the foot of the pedestal looking up at President Lincoln. "A. Lincoln" is written on the base of the statue. The title of the cartoon is written across the top. The artist signature is in the bottom right corner of the image. Quotations are from the following: Address Before the Young Men's Lyceum of Springfield, Illinois, January 27, 1838 Fragment on Government, (possibly July 1, 1854) Response to a Serenade, November 10, 1864 Last Public Address, April 11, 1865 (Printing error in cartoon: flexible should be inflexible) "Important principles may, and must, be inflexible." Speech at Peoria, Illinois, October 16, 1854 Speech at Peoria, Illinois, October 16, 1854 Address on Colonization to a Deputation of Negroes, August 14, 1862 Second, Inaugural Address, March 4, 1865 A clipping of the published cartoon from the newspaper has been pasted to the reverse. Also on the reverse handwritten in ink is: "Editorial Cartoon / by / Louis Goodwin / Columbus DISPATCH / Columbus, Ohio / Feb. 12, 1972".
