Description

This hand-colored lithograph was printed for soldiers serving in the Union Army "against the Great Rebellion." Shown in a white box with a decorative gold-colored frame in the center of the print, the complete title reads, "The Union Defenders Certificate, in Support & Defence of the Government, the Union, and the Constitution of the United States, Against the Great Rebellion." Below the title box is an oval-shaped blank area with a decorative floral border to be completed with information about the soldier such as the date of the certificate, the soldier's name and the company in which the soldier served. Above the title box is a battlefield scene showing infantry and cavalry regiments led by officers on horseback and flagbearers. An African American family is shown watching on the viewer's left. A grave with a headstone identifying it as the "Grave of the Brave" is to the viewer's right. On either side of the title box are scenes involving soldiers.
