Description
This figurine displays two injured Civil War soldiers. The soldier on the viewer's left is standing, with his right leg bent slightly so that he is standing on top of some gear. His right hand is reaching into the bag at his side and his left arm is bent at his waist in a sling made from his coat. He stares off into the distance at the viewer's left. He is in long pants, a long coat, with belts and straps that sport "US" buckles. He is also wearing a cap and has a supply bag and canteen strung across his chest. This soldier has medium long hair and a mustache. Leaning against his front is a rifle. The other soldier is kneeling on the ground. He wears a similar uniform as the other soldier, but does not have a cap. His head is bandaged, and he is in the act of bandaging his right calf. The figures rest on a cylindrical base. On the front of the pedestal is engraved "Wounded to the Rear, One More Shot." On the back side of the gear that is a step for the one soldier is engraved, "John Rogers New York." On the back of the base is engraved, "PATENTED JAN 17 1865." "Wounded to the Rear, One More Shot" was the most successful of John Rogers’s Civil War groups, which continued to sell long after the war ended. It depicts two injured Union soldiers, one of whom is preparing to fire a final shot at the enemy. This piece was part of the collection of Ben Taylor of Fairfield, Iowa, donated to The Lincoln Museum on September 24, 1999.
