Description

This lithograph depicts a German version of a Civil War battle scene. The large central picture features charging soldiers, wounded and dying people and animals, fleeing women and children, and houses on fire. The German text explains that the South maintained a horrible system of slavery to run its plantations while the North forbade it. After the secession of southern states in 1861, the North battles to save the Union, but the South wants to wash its hands of it.
