This steel engraving was done from a photograph taken of President Abraham Lincoln in November of 1863 in Washington, D. C. President Lincoln is seated in a chair in the center with one of his private secretaries, John Nicolay, seated to his right and the other private secretary, John Hay standing at his left. The president and Mr. Hay are facing toward the viewer's left while Mr. Nicolay is looking to the viewer's right.
