Description

This bronze figure depicts President Abraham Lincoln with one of his private secretaries, John G. Nicolay, to the viewer's right and General George McClellan to the viewer's left. General McClellan is shown in his Union uniform of knee high boots, pants, long coat, buttoned shirt, and a military hat. His left hand rests on the hilt of a sword that hangs by his left side. His right arm is relaxed at his side. Also to McClellan's left is a drum on the ground with a tripod of rifles surrounding it. Abraham Lincoln is shown in the middle. He is bearded, wearing a top hat, trousers, long overcoat, vest, buttoned shirt, and bow tie. His right hand rests on his hip while his left arm is relaxed at his side. Nicolay to Lincoln's left is shown with a long beard and mustache. He is wearing trousers, an un-buttoned coat, vest, shirt, and tie. He is turned to face General McClellan. His left hand rests on his hip. He holds a book in his right hand. The figures stand on a slant-sided wooden base with a front plaque that reads, "The 1862 Council of War Daniel Gray." Behind Nicolay's feet the sculptor's name is engraved along with "2/15."
