Description

This facsimile of an 1860 political cartoon features the four candidates running in the 1860 presidential election, Abraham Lincoln for the Republican Party, John Bell for the Constitutional Union Party, Stephen Douglas for the northern Democratic Party, and John Breckinridge for the southern Democratic Party. The cartoon depicts a long-limbed Abraham Lincoln sprinting ahead of his opponents as they race on a circular track. The text from left to right reads: John Bell: Bless my soul I give up. John C. Breckinridge: That long legged Abolitionist is getting ahead of us after all. Stephen Douglas: I never run so in my life.
