Description
This hand-colored lithograph features an illustration of the assassination of Colonel Elmer E. Ellsworth followed by Corporal Brownell shooting James W. Jackson, the proprietor of the Marshall House hotel. Colonel Ellsworth is depicted still holding the Confederate flag after being shot in the chest. Jackson is depicted at the viewer's left after being shot by Brownell. The title, "Murder of Col. Ellsworth of the Fire Zouaves, and the Death of Jackson, His Assassin, by the Hand of Frank Brownell, at Alexandria, Virginia, Mary 24, 1861," is printed in the margin below the image.
