Description

Black and white mezzotint engraving titled Martial Law or Order No. 11. The print illustrates the results of the edict that expelled Southern sympathizers from western Missouri. In the scene, two federal officials stand just left of center; one woman kneels and pleads at their feet while another woman flings herself over a lifeless body. A large group gathers outside a building on the left. Two African Americans--a man and a young boy--walk away from the scene in the right foreground; the man cries into his hands. In the right background a long line of people leave by wagons. Part of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, courtesy of the Indiana State Museum
