Description
This page taken from the January 17, 1863, issue of Harper's Weekly includes two cartoons. The top cartoon depicts a freed slave addressing a group of farm animals. The print is labeled across the bottom, "Cutting His Old Associates." The text for the cartoon reads, "Man of color: 'Ugh! Get out. I aint one ob you no more. I'se a Man, I is.'" The second cartoon is a depicts President Abraham Lincoln greeting General Benjamin Butler who is dressed in an apron over his uniform and is holding cleaning supplies. The text underneath reads: UNCLE ABE: "Hello! Ben, is that you? Glad to see you!" BUTLER: "Yes, Uncle Abe. Got through that New Orleans job. Cleaned them out and scrubbed them up! Any more scrubbing to give out?" The cartoon was published just after President Lincoln had removed him from command in New Orleans.
